Q:alliance Attends Opening Night of Kinky Boots

Q:alliance had the pleasure of attending the opening night performance of Kinky Boots at the Royal & Derngate theatre yesterday.

Opening it’s UK tour in Northampton, the show’s producers extended invitations to organisations in the local area that share the show’s values and promote diversity. A group of 8 members of staff and volunteers gladly accepted the invitation.

For those who are unfamiliar with Kinky Boots, it was originally released as a film back in 2005 and tells the story of a struggling British shoe factory’s young, straight-laced owner, Charlie, who forms an unlikely partnership with Lola, a drag queen, to save the business. The film was then turned into a Broadway musical, with the songs for the show written by Cyndi Lauper and it took up residence in London’s West End in 2015. To date, Kinky Boots has won 3 Tony Awards and 1 Lawrence Olivier Award.

The group thoroughly enjoyed the performance, with the whole cast delivering a fantastic performance. Whilst there was plenty of glitz and sass, there is also a serious undertone of acceptance that runs through the story. Following the show, the group commented on how we hoped that this show would help drive the change of perception around gender identity and sexuality.

We would highly recommend going to see the show if you can, and we were pleased to find out today that the show will be coming to the Milton Keynes Theatre in October 2019.
